Spartan Wrestlers take the Rock

After a close second- and third-place finish in their past two tournaments, Forks came away with its second first-place finish of the year in Vashon. The third-ranked Forks Spartans beat second-ranked Blaine Borderites by 26 points in the 14 team tournament.

The traditionally tough Rock Tournament in Vashon was no different this year. There were six of the top 20 ranked 1A schools in the state competing at Vashon High School this year.

Ricky Barragan and Miguel Morales led the scoring with first-place finishes. Barragan won the 138-pound weight class with a major decision of 15-2 against Anthony Frey of Blaine.

Third-ranked Miguel Morales won the 285-pound weight class by beating Mikey Antczak of Blaine who was the second-ranked 285-pound wrestler in the 1A ranks. With four finalists and only two champions, Forks really won the tournament by the depth of the other wrestlers.

Forks had 14 wrestlers who placed in the top six. In contrast Blaine and Zillah, which placed second and third each, had nine wrestlers who placed in the top six.

The Forks team wrestled in Castle Rock on Jan. 4 and the girls traveled to Sedro-Woolley where Brooke Petersen took first place in the 155-pound weight class. Full team details next week.
