Clallam County Fair Introduces “Open Gates” Program for 2026 Event

A new program designed to improve fair experiences for all community members will launch at the 2026 Clallam County Fair, held August 20-23 at the county fairgrounds, located at 1608 W 16th St. in Port Angeles.

The Open Gates program will feature accommodations to allow individuals with autism, PTSD, or sensory processing differences to enjoy this annual summer tradition. Funded by the county’s Department of Social and Health Services, the program helps the Clallam County Fair become one of the first in the state to offer this amenity, ensuring families and caregivers can attend the fair with confidence.

“The Clallam County Fair is like a family reunion, bringing together friends, family, and neighbors from all over the county,” said Parks, Fair and Facilities Director Don Crawford. “The Open Gates initiative aims to welcome our neurodivergent community members who may have hesitated to join in the fun.”

Key Features

Free loaner sensory bags will be available for check out between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. at the fairgrounds. These bags will include headphones, a weighted lap blanket, fidget items, and communication cards. An ID is required for check-out.

A Sensory Inclusive Trailer (SIT) will be available for those who need a break during their visit to the fair. This trailer has been designed as a quiet, calming space with seating, ambient noise, and low lighting.

The Art Barn will provide a fully accessible space at its west end, with comfortable seating, a quiet atmosphere, and items similar to those found in the sensory bags.

Wilder Stage will offer a seating area specifically for those who need a space to sit, move, or dance during the performances.

Two accommodative, adult-size changing tables will be available on the fairgrounds.

The Clallam County Fair is an annual celebration of the Olympic Peninsula community, agriculture, and family entertainment. Showcasing regional youth traditions, livestock competitions, live concerts, and local art, the fair brings together thousands of neighbors each summer at the historic Port Angeles fairgrounds.
