This week in 2000, the Forks Police Chief had resigned and taken a job in Ridgefield. District Court II Judge Susan Owens had been elected to the Washington State Supreme Court. She had been at the Forks court for 19 years and felt her rural experience would benefit the higher court. Joel and Ingrid Dahlgren were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with a party at the Elks. The Spartan football team fell just short of going to the DOME!
Fifty years ago, FHS teacher/coach Ralph Hilt was featured in a photo showing off the new audio-visual equipment purchased with the help of F Club fundraising and ITT Rayonier. The equipment was to be used in the sports program (photo). Local fisherman, Bill Moody, had caught a 27 1/4 pound steelhead in the Hoh, and a photo was proof of it (photo). Don the Woodcarver had opened a shop on Sol Duc Way. Rainbow Girls had been “kidnapped” and taken to breakfast at the Vagabond (photo).
This week in 1968, the United Good Neighbor campaign had exceeded its fundraising goal of $3,000. In Tyee-Sappho-Beaver News, Mrs. John Johnson and children, Corlie, Warren, and Willy, had traveled to Elma to visit family. Football Coach Mohondro and the FHS cheerleaders had appeared in a photo with the Sportsmanship Trophy presented to FHS by the North Olympic Officials Association (photo). In a letter to the editor, Hoh area resident Lena Fletcher had let the Game Department and USFS have it …calling some of their policies … “the height of stupidity.”
This week in 1953, it was front-page news that Edward Maneval had married Nelda Arnsted. In business news, Mr. Strong of Port Angeles had purchased the Tavern at Tyee. Drillers working on the second well for the town of Forks’ water system had hit water at 97 feet. In the Thanksgiving ad for Pay and Save, turkey was 55¢ a pound, Ozette cranberries 29¢, and canned pumpkin – 2 for 33¢. In other advertising…Ruel and Vedder had mother-of-pearl toilet seats for $8.95.
