Students Bryce Phillips and Pat Anderson helped plant native trees as part of a school/science project between Forks Middle School and the ONRC (photo).
Fifty years ago this week local scouts had learned some first aid skills (photo). Sharla and Jeremy Fraker had drawn the weekly winner in the Who’s Who contest (photo). Fishing partners Helen King and Birtie Moody were featured in a story about their fishing activities; their favorite tackle was the Spin n Glo and they liked to fish the Hoh. Birtie was featured in a photo (photo). The Mysterious Monsters, a movie about Bigfoot, was playing at the Olympic Theater.
In 1969 the snow was piled up down the middle of Mainstreet. Many local loggers, unable to work, had brought out their equipment to help keep the roads clear (photo). The Tyee/Beaver/Sappho area had seen three feet of snow fall and Art Munson’s barn built in the 1940s had collapsed.
In 1953, Hospital Guild members, Beatrix Palmer and Kathryn Shearer were making an afghan to raffle to raise money to purchase a vacuum cleaner for the Olympic Clinic. Forks Mayor Roberge had proclaimed the week to be “National VFW Week.”
This week in 1940 the Forks Shingle Mill was up and running, south of Forks. According to mill manager Harry Huling, the mill was employing 37 men at the mill and another 16 in the woods. In display ads, hickory shirts and wool union suits were on special for 69¢ at Ruel and Hammer; romeo slippers were $1.79.
