By FOFA
Friends of Forks Animals (FOFA) is a local non-profit volunteer group that has a passion for helping dogs and cats in need. FOFA relies on our community to help us financially, along with grants that enable us to do the job of improving the lives of pets within the Forks area. We have a table at Forks Outfitters every 2nd Saturday of the month and members of FOFA are glad to answer questions as well as take information for the spay/neuter of pets.
What does FOFA do?
We assist owners with food supplies if they are in a bind. We assist in spay and neutering of both cats and dogs which is a strong focus due to the large number of puppies and adult animals that roam, breed again, and cause heartache if abandoned, which more than a few are.
We make medical assistance possible for those who have pets in need. We assist veterans and the elderly with their pets by providing food and medical assistance when needed.
We help those who are dealing with feral cat colonies by teaching them how to trap the animals so they can be spayed and neutered and then returned to where they were trapped (feral cats typically do not make good pets and prefer to be outside). We do not trap feral cats ourselves but lend out traps to those who have made an appointment with Dr. Pat for a spay or neuter, which FOFA will cover.
What does FOFA NOT do?
We are not a rescue organization, nor are we an adoption agency. At times we are called to help in a situation where dogs or cats are abandoned, either on purpose or due to the death or sickness of the owner. We will work with rescue groups that we trust in other Olympic Peninsula locations to place these animals in a loving home.
We are NOT animal control, that job falls to the city of Forks or to Clallam County. We cannot respond to loose dog reports. We volunteer to help the city of Forks if a dog or cat is placed in the shelter at the Forks Airport. Volunteers will feed those animals and visit them ideally 4 times a day to walk and give them attention. The city of Forks can only send someone once a day to do this, so we pick up the slack. FOFA cannot release dogs in the shelter to their owner; dogs can only be released from the city after fines are paid.
Our message line (360-374-3332) is just that – a message line. It is checked as often as possible and is for NON-EMERGENCY situations. If you have an emergency with your pet you should call your vet, most of whom have after hours emergency numbers. The message line is for assistance with your pet’s food or medical needs.
