A Look Back …This week in the Forks Forum

This week in 2000, it was reported FPD Lt. Mike Powell was appointed as interim chief. Sharon Hall had been named OCC Employee of the Quarter. Art Gale was celebrating his 80th birthday with a party, it was a surprise. State Parks were facing budget cuts and possible closures. Razor clam digs were happening at Kalaloch. Mayor Arbeiter had presented Spartan Pat Bennett with a copy of a proclamation recognizing his winning the State Heisman Award (photo).

Fifty years ago a Lonnie Archibald photo of the old Quillayute Prairie church appeared on the front page (photo). A lot of damaging vandalism was happening to County road equipment,and vandals had also turned on a bunch of fire hydrants during freezing weather. Spartan Glen Price received the Officials’ Association Sportsmanship trophy. Zarno, the hypnotist, was appearing at the Vagabond. Brad and Frank Hanson had been selected to go on tour to Washington, DC with a choir group (photo). Pioneer Joseph Leyendecker had passed. He was born on the West End in 1894.

This week in 1968, the old Shaker Church in La Push had been condemned. It had been built in 1917. Lumber used in its construction was milled at the Iverson Mill in Forks.

In 195,3 there was a baby boom …with six birth announcements appearing on the front page … a couple of new residents were …Mr. and Mrs. Warren Paul, of Forks, welcomed a son, Ronald Bruce, and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ward welcomed a son, Walter Jr. The garden club was sponsoring a Christmas window decorating contest.
