A look Back …This week in the Forks Forum

This week in 2001, new landscaping at FHS was vandalized and destroyed. Ron Klahn had retired from Allen Logging, and a party was held. It was estimated that Klahn had driven 3.5 million miles in his truck driving career from 1967 to Jan. 2001 (photo). Long-time resident and local senior citizen advocate Helen King had died. The Quillayute Airport tower was coming down. The December birth of Emma Grayce Fleck had been announced with a photo (photo).

In 1976, the Kinders had purchased the Variety Store, and their photo appeared in the paper (photo). Windows had been broken out of the Hang-up Tavern, and were being replaced by D.D. Peterson; no further information was provided on how they got broken (photo).

This week in 1969, the usually quiet town of Forks was rocked by a robbery-homicide. The Hang-Up Tavern manager had been robbed at gunpoint of $2,000. The robbery suspect then called law enforcement to say he had shot and killed his wife. A chase of the suspect then occurred to the south of Forks before the suspect was finally apprehended.

This week in 1954, owners/editors of the Forks Forum, James and Mamie Astell, had parted ways, so to speak. Mamie had offered a goodbye letter on the front page. Saying after 14 years with the paper, she hoped she had left her mark. James remained as editor. It was reported that 90-year-old K.O. Erickson had died after suffering a stroke. K.O. had been born in Mora, Sweden, in 1864. He named Mora, WA, after his place of birth and in 1906 was elected to serve as the West End County Commissioner. In 1912, after the death of his wife, he moved to Port Angeles and started Port Angeles Savings and Loan. (A park in Port Angeles is named after him.)

This week in 1940, Harold Gronseth had been appointed as the chairman of the Infantile Paralysis Campaign. The Forks badminton team had beaten PA 21-11.
